Silly Fan Post

I'm feeling kind of dizzy at work, yay! (Which isn't quite as bad as it sounds, but I'm not feeling so hot.) So, to distract myself, I am writing a silly fan post, so tragic. Also, I might have to end this abruptly if I have to go.

As you may know, I love Fire Lord Sozin! Even though he is the Hitler of the Avatar universe. Whatever, I love Avatar Hitler, big deal. Anyway, I thought I would attempt to explain my affection. [Oh yeah, I avoided spoilers for "The Firebending Masters", just in case. Though here's what I have to say about the bit of Sozin information from that episode: hahahahahahaha.]


It will probably sound as if I have watched "The Avatar and the Firelord" episode a million times, but actually I have watched it only once in its entirety. Just so you know.

Okay, first of all, I had been waiting the whole series to find out more about Sozin and the comet and Fire Nation history. So I was all ANTICIPATORY, which leads, of course, to a nervous state that makes one more VULNERABLE to over-excitement. [PSYCHOLOGICAL BACKGROUND, V. IMPORTANT.] And when we finally did learn more, it was so great, even better than I'd hoped! I mean, there were flashbacks to multiple time periods and everything! And then Sozin was so so so so hilarious.

In fact, I find everything Sozin does hilarious. Even when he's doing something HORRIBLE, it's so over the top horrible that I can't help but be amused. (Obviously if someone did these things in real life I would be horrified, but that's another matter.) So it's like, ha ha ha, he called down ULTIMATE FIREPOWER to wipe out those who oppressed him. A whole race of people! Total overkill! (So to speak) Ha ha ha, he killed his VERY BESTEST FRIEND, who had only just moments before saved his life and had also spared his life on a previous occasion. I mean--WHAT. So horrid and mean and DRAMATIC. Such a DRAMA QUEEN.

And he got away with everything in his lifetime! (At least on the surface, dun dun DUNNN.) The Spirit World and possible afterlife consequences aside, no one could stop Sozin. He's that hardcore.

But that is not even the best part about Sozin. No way. The best part about Sozin is young Sozin, who is quite possibly even more hilarious than his older counterpart, but way less mean.

So, when we first see Sozin, he defeats Roku in the course of Firebending practice through trickery, which is obviously pretty great (omg foreshadowing), but the whole scene where he grins at Roku's legs and the tree branch and is obviously thinking "Ha ha, I will trip Roku! And OMG, his legs are so hot," is just--as I've said before--hilarious. And so UNNECESSARILY OVER THE TOP! As he catches Roku before he falls with some fancy move just to let him fall down anyway. And then help him up again. And say, "ONCE AGAIN I HAVE BEATEN YOU, OMG I'M SO GREAT." But obviously he's not mean at all, just precocious and kind of cocky. I mean, hey, who doesn't like to win? I know I do!

Probably one of the best parts is Sozin's adorable attempts to cheer up his friend. When his friend is all hopeless about his crush, Sozin's BIG IDEA is to put grass on his face. Ha ha ha ha, which is like something a little boy would do. And when Roku is down about going away to be the Avatar and cutting all his worldly ties ever, SOZIN'S AWESOME FAKEBENDING PARODY DANCE IS LIKE THE BEST AND CUTEST THING EVER, especially because it doesn't work! But then when his BEST FRIEND is still sad, he sits down and gives Roku his Fire Prince hair clippy ancient heirloom thing, which is perhaps THE OTHER BEST THING EVER, after the fakebending dance.

So basically Sozin's like, I WILL DANCE FOR YOU, and then HERE TAKE MY HAIRCLIP. I find this all incredibly endearing.

Awwww, and they have the same birthday, awwwwwwwwww. Whyyyy is that so cute? And when Sozin bows to Roku? Oh man. Too cute.

I should also point out--very seriously--that young Sozin looks so cute and cuddly, I seriously just would want to bite him if he were real. Although I would do no such thing, in actuality. But I'd WANT TO.

Now, moving on to Sozin in his late 20s, at the time of Roku's wedding. Here are some great things about that part, but more succinctly stated:

--Sozin being all grumpy at the wedding? Hilarious.
--Sozin asking to "borrow" Roku, in spite of it being completely untraditional? Hilarious.
--Sozin's idea for a fun project he and Roku can work on so they can be together again? Hilarious.
--OH ROKU WE'RE SO CLOSE AND TOGETHER WE CAN DO ANYTHING.
--HILARIOUS.

And when we next see Sozin, he has STUPIDLY AND IN AN OVER THE TOP MANNER CONQUERED PART OF THE EARTH KINGDOM. Like he thought Roku wouldn't notice? Oh no, he knew Roku would notice. Any attention is good attention for Sozin, I guess.

And then Sozin shoots a fireblast at the Avatar, which is also COMPLETELY STUPID. Of course Roku trounces him, because Roku is the Avatar.

Ha ha, and short little Sozin hanging from that pillar. Looking grumpy, with his feet dangling in the air. More hilarity. I'd love to see the awkward scene afterwards where someone has to help him get down.

All right, so that is all I have time for now, but you get the idea.

Oh yeah, also, he didn't have Azulon until he was 82. Ha ha ha!

Also, HIS WHOLE MEMOIR CENTERED AROUND HIS BFF ROKU. He was all, "remembering a time when things were so much brighter." Awwwwww. SOZIN, YOU DO HAVE A HEART, IT'S JUST LITTLE AND BITTER AND TWISTED.

I agree with you, there less obvious ways to get back at your BFF than invading another country. Especially when said friend has a flying dragon and is like. The Avatar. As if saying 'LOOK WHAT YOU MADE ME DO'.

Rozin was a lot of things, but subtle wasn't one of them. I love him for it. <33

He was also kind of cute dangling from the roof like that. I like his beard, it almost covers up his cute personality. That got a little twisted, but hey, it happens to the best of us.

And when his friend is in danger he RUSHES OVER and BATTLES THE ELEMENTS ALONGSIDE WITH HIM and then just...leaves him to die. 'I WANT MORE THAN A COOKIE'

PS The comment up there about Aang marrying Zuko with the hairpiece taped to his head has me laughing so hard. XD I've said it before, my OTP knows romance. ♥

Ha ha, yes, exactly! He wanted Roku to come see him, but Roku was always so BUSY with his AVATAR BUSINESS. So of course he had to do something to attract the Avatar's attention, right? And yes, TO MAKE ROKU SEE WHAT ROKU HAD CAUSED.

Subtle was never Sozin's style, it's true.

Ha ha ha, dangling Sozin was so cute, I almost could not stand it. The whole first half of that episode had me paralyzed with cuteness! The last half was so sad, though.

Aaaah, and yes, in that climactic scene, Sozin revealed his DUAL NATURE. Only his evil side won out, sadly. He was just too far gone at that point. *shakes head*

And I'm glad you liked the thing about the hairpiece taped to Aang's head! I was all into the idea of Aang wearing it, and then I remembered--oh wait, Aang's bald! But an instant later I realized that Sokka could invent something. Problem solved! Also, the idea of Sokka thoughtfully and gravely trying to figure out how to affix that thing to Aang's head is very amusing. Well, the whole idea is amusing, I guess! :D
